Full Mouth Reconstruction: Dental Implants

full mouth reconstruction Tucson, AZ

Dental implants are one of the best ways to replace a single missing tooth or multiple missing teeth, and many dentists recommend them as part of a full mouth reconstruction. By learning more about full mouth reconstructions and dental implants, patients can decide for themselves if treatment can be beneficial.

Dental implants for full mouth reconstruction

Dental implants are a long-term replacement solution following tooth loss. Since they can replace multiple teeth or even an entire row of missing teeth, they are a good option for a full mouth reconstruction. The following is an overview of dental implants as a part of a full mouth reconstruction.

What is a full mouth reconstruction?

A full mouth reconstruction is a set of procedures that typically involve multiple treatments to improve the appearance of the patient’s smile and oral health. It can treat a range of common issues, including:

  • Damaged teeth
  • Missing teeth
  • Gum disease
  • Jawbone loss
  • Esthetic concerns

Full mouth reconstructions are designed to improve oral health, appearance and function, whereas a smile makeover consists primarily of cosmetic procedures. Every patient receives a unique treatment plan.

An overview of dental implants

Dental implants are surgical posts that are placed inside the jaw. They are essentially the root of a replacement tooth, and there are three primary components, which are:

  • The implant
  • The abutment
  • The restoration

Depending on the number of teeth that are being replaced, the dentist may recommend a crown, bridge or denture to attach to the dental implants. For a full mouth reconstruction in which multiple teeth need replacement, a bridge or denture is usually recommended. Dentists can use implants to replace an entire row of missing teeth through a procedure known as “all-on-4” or full arch replacement.

When to consider dental implants

Dental implants are ideal for full mouth reconstruction patients who need to replace missing teeth. However, it is important to understand that the process is more invasive than dentures or fixed bridges, and the patient should be willing and able to go through a minor procedure. With that said, many dentists feel as if dental implants look, feel and function better than any other tooth-replacement solution, and they can last for more than twenty years with proper care.

How dental implants treatment works

During the consultation visit for a full mouth reconstruction, the dentist will go over all possible solutions for teeth replacement. For dental implants, the patient may require a bone grafting procedure if they have experienced bone loss in the jaw after tooth loss. Once the mouth is ready and there is enough healthy bone, the dental implant is placed. It may take several months for the mouth to heal and for the bone to fuse with the implant. Afterward, a second procedure is scheduled for the placement of the abutment and restoration.
